Home-dubbed copies onto demo tapes sent to The Boat Race venue in the 1990s by bands trying to hustle gigs, so the sketchy cottage industry is gleaming thru here strongly a bit but I try to use good tapes & my Onkyo deck is nice.

    Original release notes:
Pete Um. Spring Tapes 2007. Grist Disk 0001 2009.

"...you might like to stop and familiarise yourself with the frames before we carry on ...as you listen to the tape, notice once again how the speaker pauses for you to find the right point on the page..."

A few years ago C Joynes pointed me in the direction of a massive stack of reel to reel tapes of recordings made for use with The Open University's distance learning program, which I then made use of for mopping up some Um sap in the cupboard room at 20 Argyle Street in the spring of 2007. The recordings were then mixed to DAT on the fly with basic FX and then transferred to PC for final post-production and mastering. Now, for your pleasure, the music has been recorded onto a number of cassettes that began their lives as band demos submitted to Shebeen Arts & Music (circa mid 90s) when that worker's co-op were running The Boat Race pub (now, of course, The Vine) on Burleigh Street as a music venue. In some cases I have left some of the original demos intact at the end of the tape to provide a contrasting bookend to the Um tape jizz in order to aid your consideration of these detourned cultural documents.

I'm not entirely sure of the exact instrumentation on these recordings, but at a guess I would say a good number of the following:

    MPC 2000
    Peavey FX unit
    2-string guitar
    Oberheim 1000
    Electrix Filter Factory
    Moog Expression Pedal
    Saxophone
    Groans and chants
    Looping devices

Some pertinent info concerning my affection for working with reel-to-reel tape machines can be found here:

Also please note this instance of me ineffectually bitching about Noise musicians here:

Edit: I think The Vine is now called The Snug, ffs.

about

Buyer beware! This stuff is the "free-electronics" material that arises when I'm using a reel-to-reel machine so it's all instrumental and occasionally somehwhat gnarly. It's not "noise" per se though, just kinda alienatedly pretty and tripped-out a bit.

about

Pete Um Cambridge, UK

"A master of the miniature electro-acoustic song-poem, a form he has more or less invented and crystallised himself, his work displays a sardonic wit combined with a healthy misanthropy, in marvellous micro-collages of voice, instruments, samples, and electronics."

-Ergo Phizmiz
